Insights from a Local Crocheter

Today, I got the chance to have a nice conversation and interview about crochet at my local yarn shop.

I walked into Unraveled Yarn Boutique and simply asked the lady working if she knew how to crochet. When she said yes, I was in luck! Emily was kind enough to answer my questions and let me take notes, so please enjoy this question and answer session!

Q: How old were you when you first learned to crochet? How did you primarily learn?

A: “Well, I tried learning when I was about 7 or 8 years old, but I only began to take it seriously when I was 15. My mom was my prime instructor!”

Q: Why did you choose crochet?

A: “It’s slightly complicated. At the time, I felt like everyone was creative and had an artistic outlet except for me. I wanted to get involved with something creative and I already had a little prior experience, so I reached for crochet.”

Q: What kept you going/motivated when you were first starting out?

A: “I think social media has helped me to stay motivated as I find projects that look interesting to create. That also helped me take up crocheting again as I had wider access to see the cool things that people are able to make. I think also what I said before of everyone else being creative pushed me to stay consistent.”

Q: What is a piece of advice you would give to an experienced crocheter who is looking to branch out and try new techniques?

A: “Try knitting! It truly challenges you to try something out of your comfort zone. Since I started working here (Unraveled), I was pushed to learn knitting and I’ve actually grown to like it more than crocheting at the moment.”

Q: Are there any crocheters who inspire you to continue your crochet work?

A: “Well one of my good friends, Jen, has created a crochet business and I think her work is really impressive so she motivates me to make cool things.”

Q: Are there any particular resources (books, tutorials, etc.) that made a big difference in improving your work/technique?

A: “I would say to interact with your local yarn store! Since working here (Unraveled), I’ve gained so many resources. When you come into the store, we (employees) will always try to help if you have any questions on how to fix your project, need yarn recommendations, or want to try out a new pattern. Take advantage of your local resources!”

Thank you so much to Emily at Unraveled Yarn Boutique! I’m glad I could gain insight and resources from an experienced crocheter as well as chat crochet with another person who has experience!
